Functions of the Department
The Engineering Department performs a variety of functions, including:
  • Engineering Records - Maintain and update drawings, plans and maps for water and sewer utilities, street work improvements, subdivisions and planning proposals.
  • Municipal Projects - Projects undertaken by the City as the developer, including street improvements, upgrading of water and sewer mains, etc. Engineering Department Staff co-ordinate these projects from the planning stage through to completion. The work is normally contracted out and a public tendering process is used to obtain the best price for construction.
  • Service Connections - Receive and process applications for water and sewer service connections to new or existing developments, prepare cost estimate and coordinates installation with the Building Inspection and Public Works Departments.
  • Civic Addresses - Maintain address map and assign civic addresses to new developments.
  • Public Utilities - Liaise with utility companies; process and issue permits for service installations on municipal streets.
  • Engineering Inspection - Undertake site inspections for subdivision development and manufactured home park development to ensure installation of water and sewer mains and services and construction of roads complies with municipal bylaw standards.
  • Public Enquiries - Provide information regarding water and sewer main locations, property boundaries, zoning enquiries, subdivision bylaw requirements and other issues related to the municipal infrastructure.
