Hear from our staff:

Ross Coupé, Corporate Officer

1.) How and when did your employment journey begin with the City of Williams Lake?

After working for several years in the government sector across the province, I had the opportunity to return to my hometown in 2020 to take on the Corporate Officer role with the City of Williams Lake.

2.) What is your current role and what does your job entail?

As the Corporate Officer, I head the team that is responsible for the City's records management, bylaw development and Council meeting organization. Our team is also responsible for public access to City information and election administration. The key part of my job is coordinating City Council's decision-making processes, making sure that relevant information is presented and that Council's decisions are acted on.

3.) Name one or more things you enjoy most or look forward to about your job?

One of the best aspects of my job is the variety of work I get to do. No two weeks are ever the same, and I am constantly interacting with different departments and community groups to help them navigate the complex rules and regulations that govern the local government sector. The other best part of my job is getting to work with an absolutely fantastic team of City staff and Council members on projects that improve the daily lives of people in the community.

4.) What is one piece of advice or tip you would give to those seeking employment with the City?

If you are interested in working for the City, don't hesitate to chat with anyone who works here. They are a wealth of knowledge, and can give you a lot of detail on the wide variety of work we do.

Vanessa Schwartz, Legislative Services Assistant Coordinator

1.) How and when did your employment journey begin with the City of Williams Lake?

I began my employment with the City of Williams Lake in June of 2010 after the completion of the Applied Business Technology course at Thompson Rivers University. While I was in this program I was fortunate to have my practicums assigned at City Hall, which was a great experience for me.

The staff made me feel very welcome and I knew right away it was where I wanted to start my career. I applied and started working for the City as soon as my course had finished and have now been a City of Williams Lake employee for the past 12 years.

2.) What is your current role and what does your job entail?

My current role at the City is the Legislative Services Assistant Coordinator. In this position I am responsible for scheduling and attending meetings, creating agendas and taking minutes for several Council committees. In addition, I am also responsible for the preparation of meeting rooms, maintaining the filing of records and the reception of the upper floor in City Hall.

3.) Name one or more things you enjoy most or look forward to about your job?

One of the things I look forward to the most is working daily with the amazing staff at the City. We have such a great team who works together so well and helps each other out. I also enjoy the variety of tasks, projects and events the City participates in.

4.) What is one piece of advice or tip you would give to those seeking employment with the City?

If someone is considering joining our team, I suggest following the City of Williams Lake's Facebook page for available positions as they are posted frequently or browsing the job postings on the City of Williams Lake website. Since starting with the City several years ago I have been fortunate to work in several different departments and I found it to be a great learning experience.

The City offers so many positions in different areas which helps you find the perfect job.
