Within this region there are eighteen aboriginal bands. These bands are small isolated communities with anywhere from 100 to 500 members. They are people sparsely dispersed in a large geographic area. The different nations that make up this area are:
- Tsilhoqot’in (Chilcotin) – Chilcotin area
- Kwakawakaw’akw – and Coast Salish Nation – Bella Coola area
- Carrier Sekani – Chilcotin area
- Sewepemc – (Shuswap) – their territory extends from the Columbia River on the east slope of the Rocky Mountains to the Fraser River on the west
The proportion of aboriginal residents in the Cariboo is four times the provincial proportion comprising 10% or the regions population.
