Due to unforeseen circumstances and icy conditions at the Williams Lake Stampede Grounds, the City has made the decision to cancel its Family Day fireworks scheduled for the evening of Monday, February 21. The fireworks will be rescheduled for another date when the icy conditions can be managed easily.
All other Family Day weekend events are still scheduled to take place. The music, DJ and Williams Lake Lions Club hot dogs and hot chocolate originally planned at the Stampede Grounds during the fireworks will now be held at Kiwanis Park from 10 am until 1 pm. The events at Kiwanis Park will also include snow painting and snow building, plus a photo contest.
“Safety concerns for both the public and the horses due to icy conditions at the Stampede Grounds were brought to the City’s attention by the community, so we made the difficult decision to call off the fireworks,” said Gary Muraca, Chief Administrative Officer.
On top of the snow painting and photo contest at Kiwanis Park, the City will be offering free swimming at the West Fraser Aquatic Centre from 12 to 3:30 pm, plus a free skate under the laser lights in rink two of the Cariboo Memorial Recreation Complex from 1:15 to 3:15 pm.
Also included in the Family Day weekend festivities is a ‘Bring the Fam Rail Jam’ taking place on Sunday, February 20 in Boitanio Park from 10 am to 1 pm. The rail jam will feature three co-ed categories in both skiing and snowboarding including ages six to 11, ages 12 to 15 and ages 16 and over.
At the rail jam, prizes will be up for grabs from local sponsors Red Shred’s Bike and Board Shed and Fox Mountain Brewing Co. There will also be free pizza from Red Tomato Pies, refreshments, competition judging and more. Registration for the rail jam begins at 10 am.
Activities being held both days will be free of charge for all participants and all Provincial Health Office regulations and guidelines will be followed.
